Sleeplessness and Stress
Sleep Cycle and Stress
Quality sleepis as essential to survival as food and water.Lack of sleep makes it harder to concentrate ,respond quickly and increases irritation .
Sleep is important to a number of brain functions.Sleep removes toxins in your brain that build up while we are awake due to metabolic activities.Sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body—from the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolism, immune function, mood, and disease resistance. Chronic lack of sleep, or getting poor quality sleep, increases the risk of health problems like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity.Lack of sleep increases oxidative stress and hence increases inflammation in the body which leads to auto-immune and neurodegenerative diseases.
Hypothalamus-It is a peanut-sized structure deep inside the brain that contains groups of nerve cells Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN)that sense whether it’s a day or night through sensing light and they regulate our circadium rhythm i.e sleep-wake cycle. Most blind people maintain some ability to sense light to help them regulate their sleep/wake cycle. At night it sends signals to adrenal gland that there is a lack of light .After receiving signals Adrenal Gland increases production of hormone melatonin.Melatonin induces sleep.
Our cells also release a chemical called adenosine that make us feel sleepy. Caffeine counteracts sleepiness by blocking the actions of adenosine.
Brainstem– It controls the transitions between wake and sleep. It sends signals to relax muscles and limb movements while entering into sleep.
Sleep-promoting cells (SCN) within the hypothalamus and the brain stem produce a braina neurotransmittercalled GABA(Gamma-aminobutyric acid )that slows down activity in the brain and relaxes our mind so that we could sleep easily.
GABA is known for producing a calming effect. It plays a major role in controlling hyperactivity in the brain that causes with anxiety, stress and fear.
Stress and Sleep Corelation
Sleep and stress are linked in a cyclical, bidirectional relationship. Stress can cause poor sleep, and a lack of quality sleep can increase stress, creating a harmful feedback loop.
Learn How Stress affects Sleep
- High Cortisol Levels and Sleeplessness
Persistent stress put our body in a mode where it continuously release stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol which leads to increase in blood pressure, anxiety, sleeplessness and insomnia. It affects sleep-wake cycle and mental health. Due to high levels of adrenaline and cortisol hormone ,GABA become inefficient to calm the mind and our body and brain remains in active state .
- Oxidative Stress ,Inflammation ,Aging-Stress weakens our immune system means it reduces body`s ability to remove dead cells and repair damaged cells which lead to increase in free radicals .These free radicals creates oxidative stress which further leads to inflammation . Inflammation accelerates the process of aging and age related diseases like sleeplessness ,insomnia ,skin problems and hairfall.
- Gut Inflammation and Neurotransmitters-High levels of stress disrupts the balance of the microbial ecosystem in the gut which causes inflammation and influence mental health as our intenstine has neurotransmitters which directly influence the brain functions.Happy hormones like serotonin and dopamine get reduced which leads to unhappiness and worry creating anxiety ,stress ,lack of concentration and other cognitive issues.
Diseases linked to stress-induced inflammation:
Chronic lack of sleep and stress can lead to a wide range of serious physical and mental health problems due to the disruption of normal bodily functions, hormonal balance, and immune response.
Physical Diseases and Conditions
- Cardiovascular Diseases: high blood pressure (hypertension), increased heart rate, higher risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.
- Type 2 Diabetes: Insufficient sleep and high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can lead to insulin resistance.
- Obesity: increased appetite, cravings for high-calorie foods, weight gain, and obesity.
- Weakened Immune System: make individuals more vulnerable to infections (like the common cold and flu) and slowing recovery times.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: cause digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, and general discomfort.
- Endocrine Disorders: decreased fertility and menstrual irregularities.
- Certain Cancers: an increased risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer.
Mental and Neurological Conditions
- Anxiety and Depression
- Cognitive Impairment: Brain function is negatively impacted, leading to difficulties with concentration, memory (memory loss), problem-solving, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
- Neurodegenerative Diseases: higher risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, as sleep is vital for clearing toxic waste products (like the protein amyloid) from the brain.
- Psychiatric Disorders: In severe and long-term cases, extreme lack of sleep can contribute to psychiatric disturbances such as disorientation, paranoia, and hallucinations.
Both lack of sleep and stress exacerbate each other’s effects, creating a negative cycle that can lead to severe long-term health consequences.

Magnesium (Magnesium Sulphate)– It helps activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for calming the mind.Itdecreases cortisol level and increasesproduction of melatonin and serotoninhormone and GABA neurotransmitter which relaxethe mind and induce sleep.
Potassium (Potassium Chloride)– It is essential for the proper contraction and relaxation of muscles and nerve cells. It plays a critical role in nerve signal transmission, which is crucial for regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
Sleep is crucial for both physical and mental health.Sleeplessness can be caused by stress, anxiety and depression.Lack of sleep creates oxidative stress and accelerates aging.Long term sleeplessness and stress give also give rise to many auto-immune diseases like high BP, diabetese, obesity, etc and neurodegenerative diseases like loss of memory ,lack of concentration,Parkinson`s Disease and Alziemer. In worsen cases it may also lead to psychiatric disorders.
Due to persistent stress and anxiety ,hormones like cortisol and adrenaline increases which keep our body in active state while we are trying to sleep and GABA a neurotansmitters that slows down the activity in the brain falls short to calm down the brain activity .Thats why we experience rushing thoughts and sleeplessness at night and stay awake.
Regular usage of Only Won`s Sleep and Relaxation Syrup helps in relaxing the mind.Gradually, it will destress you and you will experience a calm and composed mental state which will let you fall asleep easily. It also regulate age related memory loss and concentration.
