While India is its origin, Ayurveda has been officially recognized as a system of medicine in at least 16 countries and is practiced as a regulated form of alternative medicine in many others.

Countries that have officially adopted or recognized Ayurveda as a medical system include:

Asia/Middle East:
Bangladesh ,Bahrain ,Nepal (widely practiced and regulated) ,Oman ,Pakistan, Saudi Arabia ,Singapore (self-regulated with government scrutiny of products)
Sri Lanka (integrated into the national health system)
United Arab Emirates (UAE) (an approved medical system where consultations and medicines are covered by insurance)

Europe:
Hungary (recognized as naturopathy) , Serbia, Switzerland (recognized as alternative medicine, with federal diplomas introduced in 2015)
Italy (recognized as a medical act for medical doctors, surgeons, and dentists after certified training)

Americas:
Brazil (recognized as one of the 29 integrative health practices by the Ministry of Health), Cuba (regulated under the Natural and Traditional Medicine Program) ,Colombia

Africa:
Mauritius (integrated into the health system since 1992) ,Tanzania, South Africa (practice is recognized and represented on official boards)

In other countries like Germany, Austria, and the United States, Ayurveda is generally considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), where practice might not be a fully independent medical system but is permitted under specific frameworks or as a “natural medicine practitioner”.

The Indian Ministry of AYUSH actively works to promote and standardize Ayurveda globally through international cooperation and MoUs with various nations and institutes.
